Maruyuenjie MARU (Hong Kong, China)

Born in Hong Kong, now resides long-term in Guangzhou. A seasoned inclusive art workshop instructor, postmodern dancer, performance artist, and live painter, also engaged in choreography, theater, painting, writing, and installation art creation. Maru has collaborated frequently with Hong Kong's "Y-Space" and has also participated in several consecutive editions of the Taipei i-dance Festival's "Improvised Flowing Banquet". In 2016 and 2018, he traveled to the United States to participate in the January Workshop at Earthdance led by Nancy Stark Smith, and was a member of the Long Dance research project in 2018, with a personal research topic of "Dance Drawing/Drawing Dance". In 2005, he encountered the DanceAbility method, and in 2007, he began to develop Symbiotic Dance. From 2009 to 2018, he served as the Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Symbiotic Dance Company, obtained the DanceAbility Teacher Certificate in 2012, formulated the "Symbiotic Dance Notation" in 2015, obtained the ContaKids Parent-Child Contact Teacher Certificate in 2017, and served as the Artistic Director of the Guangzhou Symbiotic Good Dance Company in 2018, later transitioning to Art Consultant. In 2021, he began organizing "Barrier-Free Contact Improv Dance Jam" in Guangzhou and also experimented with forms such as CI street stalls, grass dance jam, and Maru dance dates under the theme "Dancing and Painting with Maru". Maru's paintings of various performances and dances have been published in the United States in Contact Quarterly (CQ) and have won the first prize for T-shirt pattern design at the Freiburg Contact Improvisation Festival in Germany.

Maru, who calls himself a postmodern improvisational dancer, is also the most renowned "painter" in the contact improvisation circle. His works have been published in Contact Quarterly (CQ) and have won the first prize for T-shirt pattern design at the Freiburg Contact Improvisation Festival in Germany. In recent years, he has often provided his works for use in various domestic art festivals and events.

In This Festival, Maru Will Bring Many Periphery Products Hand-Painted and Designed by Himself, the Following is a Preview of Some of Maru's Periphery Products:

Hand-Painted Knee Pads:

Maru has actually always wanted to make embroidered knee pads, which are very practical for dancing on harder floors. However, due to the constant inability to meet the required print quantity, he ended up hand-drawing some instead. The themes include door gods, dance scores, philosophers, and artists, among others.

CI Magic Headscarf:

The pattern and theme (Light · Symbiosis · Contact) were recorded through live painting during the early class led by A Xiao in Dali for contact improvisation. It is a pattern composition that is very Somatics (body-mind guidance/psychosomatics).

“Unplugged Doubt Cinema”:

The "Doubt Cinema" originates from "Doubt Spectrum Wonderscore," which was originally a secret "UnderScore" practice conducted by a group of dancers in New York in the "interim between being discovered and not being discovered." Later, Maru led the "Symbiotic Not Bad Dance Company" to practice "small dances" among the crowds on a certain pedestrian street, discovering that the everyday actions and interactions of passersby themselves were very "remarkable." Dance performances are everywhere in life!

In "潜动谱Underscore," there is a "Noticing Composition," which means "-paying attention to composition." Nancy Stark Smith's daily practice for students in this regard is to use (embodied) eyes (not a camera) to take 'Snapshots' of impressions, which essentially refers to the "ability" to "appreciate with one's heart"!

"The Unplugged Doubt Cinema" once again conceptualizes the establishment of the "empty middle" framework, incorporating several elements of "潜动谱Underscore": (     ) Arriving (Arrival), the rectangular Opening Score, the Observing (Observation) of the earlobe and eye, and the Noticing Composition (Noticing the Composition) with the focus symbol, all combining into a "Portable Viewing Card"!

So, find a time to carefully watch and enjoy the "dance imagery" that you "see." Hmm, any movement can be "appreciated as" dance!

Postcards:

Postcards of Maru's Early Performance Art Works (in Limited Quantities), Including Works Published in the Surrounding Jump at Y-Space in Hong Kong.

Maru's Drawn Talisman Card:

This is not "Zen Twisting"! Each piece is a unique, spontaneous hand-drawn totem painting that can be interpreted in any way, hence it may possess magical functions: warding off evil spirits, protecting the home, and ensuring safety! It can be paired with a hanging rope.
