2019 Shanghai Improvisation Festival

Ming Shen Ku

Taiwan, China

As an active choreographer and dancer, Ming-Shen Ku has settled her base in Taiwan(CN) since 1987. Ms. Ku’s works are influenced by many western and eastern dance styles, a merging development from her diverse backgrounds.


Since 1992, Ms. Ku became deeply involved in Contact Improvisation and introduced it to Taiwan. She founded her dance company “Ku & Dancers” in 1993 to present new works and promote the concept of improvisation. “Ku & Dancers” has set their footprint in New York, Australia, Paris, London, the mainland of China, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan.


She has collaborated with many dance companies and events in Taiwan(CN), Hong Kong(CN), Japan, Australia, Austria as well as U.S.  Her solo performance has also been invited to tour in the US, London, Paris, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the mainland of China and Hong Kong(CN). The review from New York Times has commented her work “simple and handsome”.


Ms. Ku has also been invited as a guest artist to perform and teach in many universities and dance companies around the world. She received the Wu San Lien award, a lifetime achievement award in 2009, and the National Award(TW) for Arts in 2020.



Victor Choi-wo MA

Hongkong, China


Victor Choi-wo MA founded Y-Space in 1995 and he is the art director. He was in the first graduating class of the School of Dance of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Upon graduation, he joined The Hong Kong Ballet, and resumed study at the HKAPA School of Drama in 1990. In 1996, he received the Asian Cultural Council Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship to conduct research on dance and theatre in the USA.


In 2002, he further received the Hong Kong Arts Development Council-University of Leeds-Chevening Scholarships for a Master’s degree programme in Performance Studies in the UK. As a choreographer with over 60 creations, he has also been a movement director for many local and international companies from Taiwan, China, South Korea, India, the USA, Australia, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Zimbabwe, etc.


His major works include None of Your Business, Not a Double Room, Unconscious I & II, Dance “In” Possible!? I - V, Improvisation Land Series 1 - 62, Air and Breath I & II, Body, I.D. & Space I - V, Victor Ma's Dance Exhibition I & II, RE/evolution, Suddenly, On and On and Turn Turn Turn…, Room X, Door etc.


Victor has been the Art Director and Curator of i-Dance Festival (HK) since 2009. He has received the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2016 on Artist of the Year (Dance). Starting from 2019, he organizes the “Organic Form and Transformation Training” one-year certificate course in Dance and Performing Arts, and serves as the Chief Designer and Instructor of the course.


Mandy Ming-yin YIM

Hongkong, China

Co- founder of Y-Space, Mandy Yim graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts School of Dance. She was the Hong Kong Ballet and City Contemporary Dance Company dancer from 1988 – 1996.


She was a recipient of the Asian Cultural Council Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship in 1996 to do her dance research in the USA. In 2000, she was invited to create a site-specific work “Chop-Suey” for the Harare International Festival of the Arts. September in the same year, was invited to attend the Norway Oktoberdans Festival & End of Millenium Festival and participate in the performing arts festival of artists-in-residence program, has also been invited to Germany Delesideng Tanzwoche Festival Wishful Thinking Project, Korea Fringe Festival, India Kolkata Interface Festival, Australia Melbourne Beyond Butoh Fringe Festival, Beijing Dashanzi International Art Festival, Shenzhen OCAT Comtemporary Dance Festival & Hunan Changde, Poland International Contemporary Dance Conference & Performance Festival, i-Dance Taipei, i-Dance Korea, i-Dance Japan creation, Hunan and Beijing of China for performances and exchanges.


Since 2009, Yim has acted as the producer for i-Dance Festival (HK) and her teaching, performances, creation toured Europe, Asia and Africa. Yim is currently the Education and Outreach Director of Y-Space. Starting from 2019, she is the course designer and instructor of the one-year Certificate in Dance and Performing Arts program “Organic Form and Transformation Training”. Starting from 2019, she is the course designer and instructor of the one-year Certificate in Dance and Performing Arts program “Organic Form and Transformation Training”.




Chico Katsube

Japan


Dance improvisation artist from Osaka, Japan. In 2000, she founded Contact Improvisation Group CIco in Tokyo and has organized international and local projects with many talented artists. (http://ci-jp.2-d.jp )


In 2012, she moved from Tokyo to Kagoshima with Shoko Kashima. They started the activity with the focus on exploring and integrating Asian culture into improvisation and establishing the art community in the countryside of Kagoshima. She and Shoko have been members of “I-Dance” since 2011 and have been organizing i-Dance Japan since 2013. (http://i-dancejapan.net)


Since 2020,  Influenced by the Corona pandemic, she began research of “Offline Remote CI”.She wishes to continue her research as it suggests one major possibility in the field of dance art.



Shoko Kashima

Japan

Dancer, improviser, photographer, and teacher based in Kagoshima. She received her Master of Arts in Dance Education from Ochanomizu University in Tokyo. In 2000, she was awarded a one-year scholarship from the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists to study dance in New York. After returning to Japan, Shoko began working with Chico Katsube as a member - and co-director - of Contact Improvisation Group CIco.


She is fabulously known as a photographer, and has a good feeling for taking dance pictures.


In 2012, she moved from Tokyo to Kagoshima with Chico Katsube and organized “i-Dance Japan,” which is the International Contact Improvisation Festival in Kagoshima from 2013.



In addition to the above five international mentors, supporting artists from nationwide will also share their experiences on different physical topics during the festival.

Advanced Class Registration Requirements

1. Students majoring in dance, performance or physical arts

or

2. Students who have had more than 30 hours of learning experience in contact improvisation courses/workshops

and

3. Students who have basic abilities such as weight bearing, supporting or lifting during dance (must)


Students who apply for advanced classes:

Please fill in the following form after registering in the WeChat store.

If the instructor team believes that your experience is not enough for the advanced class, you may be transferred to the basic class.

Participants in Advanced and Basic classes

will receive the same hours of instruction

from 5 international masters.

The only differences will be the themes and intensity.



Registration Information

1. After successful registration for all art festival courses, tickets cannot be refunded;

2. Please arrange your time in advance. If you miss a course due to personal reasons, we will not provide remedial classes, withdrawals, or rescheduling applications. You can transfer your tickets by yourself;

3. The copyright of photos and videos taken during the art festival belongs to the Inch Dance and might be used for future events and promotions;

4. The fee includes the cost of activities during the art festival, not accommodations and meals. If there are friends from overseas or other places, the organizer can help seek local accommodation support within the Shanghai community.
