Workshop content:
This workshop is designed for advanced beginner/intermediate Contact Improvisation dancers. It will begin where we left off this summer at the 2018 ShangHai Improvisation Festival. We will practice the rolling techniques in Steve Paxton's material for the spine and practice applying them in our dances. These techniques are helpful in flying, falling and providing safe structures for supporting while moving. An emphasis will be placed on two or more dancers following a single impulse, like two rivers that join into one.We will continue to deepen our listening practices with an emphasis on 'emptying the legs'. The goal is to be ready to move in any direction at anytime, to receive or to offer support at any time with any part of the body. Moving towards this goal opens our dances to exponential possibilities. Each session will begin with a somatic warm up designed to open us to the sensations of our own bodies. We will then move seamlessly into a question that invites us to move into contact with one another. Once we are warmed up as a group, we will practice a technique that we will then use in our open dancing. Some CI experience is recommended. Experience in another movement form such as contemporary dance, Tai Chi or Aikido is also helpful.
